Feeling Good

Everything will work out for you. It will. I have no doubt.

The sooner you accept that, the sooner you let go of the need to wrestle every challenge to the ground, the sooner you stop banging your head against doors that keep closing, the sooner you let go of the struggle, the sooner the path forward will become clear to you.

The signs are all around you. But you have to be in the right frame of mind to see them. When you’ve lost your keys, sometimes you’re so focused on the fact that they’re lost that you won’t see them even if they are right in front of you.

The nature of emotions

Emotions are, in a quite literal way, perceptions of possibilities. When you feel on top of the world, anything seems possible. When you’re in total despair, nothing seems possible. When you’re angry, you see something blocking future possibilities and you try to blast it out of the way. When you feel hope, you see a possible path forward towards the future you want.

In general, negative emotions are associated with decreased or backward looking possibilities. Positive emotions are associated with seeing more possibilities and moving forward.

Now, some important points that follow from this idea.

It is advisable to make decisions only when you are in a positive, forward looking frame of mind. Anything less than that, and you are excluding important information and you may dismiss perfectly viable solutions because you believe they are impossible from where you are in that moment.

It’s important to stay in that positive, forward looking frame of mind as much as possible. Not just because it feels better (which should be reason enough), but also because you will be more receptive to signs and impulses.

The filtering effect of emotions is not limited to physical signs or our thoughts. It directly affects the evolution of the physical world. Quantum physics tells us that the world is probabilistic: we can only predict probabilities of outcomes, not specific ones. It also tells us that we as conscious observers are who determine the specific outcomes. Our emotions also influence those probabilities, so our emotions also directly influence what we can experience physically.

Your inner self always sees the broader picture, and will always try to guide you towards your greatest fulfillment. But it is limited by what you can receive and allow.

In a nutshell, it’s not so much that our situation improves and then we feel better (as is the common view), but that feeling better will itself lead to an improved situation.

Stay positive

From a practical point of view, it tells us that the surest and fastest way to bring about positive changes in our life is to stay positive and avoid negative emotions as much as possible. This means you refuse to worry. It means that if something gets too frustrating or angers you, you walk away, at least for a while.

It means you keep an open mind. Be aware that you don’t see the whole picture, but that the guidance you receive is given from that broader perspective. So trust it even if it doesn’t make sense to you at the time.

It means you let go of the struggle. It means you start from the belief that everything always works out for you. Because it does and it will.

It means you focus on and appreciate the good things in your life: your pets with their diverse and delightful personalities, the beauty of Nature, the warmth of the sun on your skin… Oh, and did you notice the sun came up this morning? Like it has done and will keep doing for millions of years?

Show Appreciation

Appreciation truly is one of the most beautiful, beneficial emotions. Love, true unconditional love, is a form of appreciation.

Of course, you can’t feel good all the time. But you can always reach for better. Despair can turn into anger, then into blame, then into indifference, and finally into hope. Hope is the point-of-no-return towards a better future.

But beyond hope there is encouragement, empowerment, eagerness, confidence, inspiration, freedom, joy, love, passion, appreciation…

A moment of appreciation in the morning when you’re still enjoying the comfort of your bed, is very beneficial. And when you’re there, in that really good feeling place, you milk it. You get every drop of good feeling you can out of it.
